Whoa.. I never knew I could sew...

First.. Not sure if I've mentioned it.. but these Ball Joint Dolls are HIGHLY addictive. So after first Big Kid got one, and I got one, the turn now came to Little Kid (who, at 12 isn't really "little" anymore - she's taller than me...)

And well.. she got a girl-doll and...

Seriously.. I HAVE to show off...

I never counted myself among Those Who Could Sew, nor did I ever plan to enter their ranks.

But getting these BJD's - and especially getting a CUTE girly BJD (heh and yeah.. me who has never played with girlie-dolls either...) has apparently triggered some dormant gene in me because I've been sprouting out clothes for Dina (Little Kid's doll) since we got her last Wednesday.

And that's not counting the wizard robes I've made for Sevvie or the t-shirts and vest I've made for Ace...

Anyone here believe in ghost-seamstresses manifestating like this? ;o)
  • Oh, well done, there!
    • Heh thanks. Mostly, it's a mix of cheating (luckily, seams in doll clothihng doesn't need to be able to sustain the same stress as RL clothis, meaning you can fake a lot) and some things are easier to make in small (then again some things are definitely more difficult)

Also it all comes down to some easy pattterns, which I've been lucky enough to find online :)
  • See? You *are* multi-talented. Very nice!
    • Thanks!

mmm.. either I'm multi-talented.. or not really talented in anything and just branching out, trying to grasp *something* I can vaguely figure out how to do?

I think, honestly, that I'm an amateur in a LOT of subjects. And that's not meant to denigrate myself. Just stating a fact. An amateur is someone who's fairly good at something without being a pro. That fits me in practically anything I do :)
  • hey, I am seriously 'fabric-impaired' and those costumes are wonderful! I love the jeans, the pink slip, with lace, the stripey tights... you are a talented amateur, with a passion.

    So, how is Sevvie?
    • Sevvie is fine. A little envious perhaps - but hey-- HE is the one who insists on wearing his black robes 24/7...

And thanks. This is all made out of old clothes, I've just been rummaging through my drawers for stuff with pretty patterns :o)
  • Wow! Excellent work!
    • :o) Thanks! Not sure how excellent* it is. But it's quite passable at least :)
  • I did sew before I got into BJDs, but not much. Mainly fixing the fit of old clothing or making them prettier by adding stuff. After I got my dolls, though... I pretty much never buy anything for my dolls if I can feasibly make it myself, which has given me a few headaches. Kefka's wardrobe, in particular hurts the eyes with its clashing and the brain with the sheer amount of details. Remind me why I decided to get a doll whose character design was done by Yoshitaka Amano again?

My current projects includes a fancy wizard's robe, a three-piece suit (shirt and jacket left...), this ridiculous excuse for an scientist's outfit, and accurate Kabuki kimono for a ghost role.
    • Well I finally got a proper pattern for a robe.. but looking at it, I think it's very much like the robe I'd already made for Sevvie. So I think I'll pass, this time. Or at least until I get some plain black cotton or similar to sew it from. I still want to sew a *proper* Hogwarts-styled robe. But in a way I'd rather make that for Harry - once I get him *LOL* (I've set my eyes on a passable doll, that, with a change of faceup could be a very nice Harry. At least I think so... (http://abjd.proboards43.com/index.cgi?board=salg&action=display&thread=1204061514) - I'm not 100% sure I like the eyes, which is the main reason why I haven't reserved him or anything... but he's looking good, I think.. Right amount of innocense and ... something else.
      • The robe I'm working on is a little more fantasy-themed, and probably slightly inspired by World of Warcraft, because I love some of the robes there, and it's not really Ash's everyday outfit. He usually wears pants and sweaters, the robe is pretty much his work uniform. I tend to modify patterns a lot. For Ash's robe, I'm using a modified coat pattern I have.

He's lovely! I must admit I haven't paid much attention to the Leeke dolls, just the wigs, and I've obviously missed out. Some of them are really gorgeous.
  • Those are awesome! When I was young, I had received a gift of an oversized movable doll (16") from a neighbour - it had been hers in the 60's, and my mom took it to a friend of hers who was seamstress, and got an entire wardrobe done for her. I was so excited! I still remember it. Good times. *g*
    • Ah yes. I remember my dolls when I was a kid, always wore knitted/crocheted clothes because there was an abundance of aunts in my family and they always made clothes for my dolls. My grandmother also occasionally sewed dresses for one of my dolls, if she had scraps from making other clothes. I think I still have one of them, somewhere. Sure brings back memories :)

But I've never sewn or crocheted or knitted anything myself until now. Dunno why, actually.. coz it's FUN!
  • Good for you, my dear! Another one to add to your already long list of skills!
